Dr Aimee Fox of the Defence Studies Department is the first woman to receive the British Army Military Book of the Year award for 'Learning to Fight'.

Six books were shortlisted, including titles from our own Dr Nick Lloyd, Prof Sir Lawrence Freedman, Prof Theo Farrell, Lt Gen (ret'd) Sir John Kiszely, and Johnny Mercer MP. The judging panel was made up of six individuals representing different Corps, Ranks, and Genders from both the Regulars and Reservists, a real cross-section of the modern British Army.

Dr Fox is first woman to be awarded this prize and said: "It is such an honour to have won the 2018 British Army Military Book of the Year with my first book, Learning to Fight. As the first woman to be awarded this prize, the honour is even greater. I would like to thank the judging panel and WO Paul Barnes who has been the driving force behind this prize. It is fantastic that serving soldiers and officers from the British Army thought so highly of the book, which, for me, speaks to the continuing relevance and importance of history to the armed forces, but also showcases the great research that we do here at the Defence Studies Department".
