The Department of War Studies is seeking to appoint a Professor of War Studies. The Department of War Studies has recently celebrated its 60th anniversary and is one of very few academic departments in the world focused on understanding the complex realm of war, conflict, security and international politics through inter-disciplinary teaching, research, and engagement. We sit within the School of Security Studies, alongside the Defence Studies Department and King’s Institute of Applied Security Studies (KIASS), together forming the largest community of scholars in the world dedicated to producing world-leading research on all aspects of security and international relations. Our research develops new empirical knowledge, employs innovative theory, and addresses vital policy issues. We are seeking to appoint a distinguished scholar who has an outstanding international profile in the field of War Studies with expertise in strategic studies, international security and contemporary war to join our vibrant research and scholarly community. The post holder will contribute to outstanding research-led teaching to the next generation of scholars in war, conflict, security and international studies and to generate interaction and knowledge exchange between the study and practice of war, conflict and security. The successful candidate will have a strong track record of high-quality research and will be able to contribute to the development and delivery of our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant field and have a high-quality track record of publications and in securing research income.

• To contribute to the enhancement of the Department/School’s research profile and reputation. • To contribute to the academic leadership of the Department/School as requested by the Head of School. • To lead and sustain top-quality research activity through a portfolio of individual and/or joint research projects and to secure the funding required for this research as required. • To supervise, guide and support postgraduate research students and/or research staff. • To attend and play a leading role at meetings and internationally recognized conferences to present research findings and thereby enhance the national and international standing of the Department/School. • To take responsibility for the development, planning, organisation and delivery of both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities within the School. • To develop and use a variety of methods to assess student learning and provide feedback that is timely, relevant, and appropriate. • To undertake any other reasonable duties that may be required by the Head of Department, Head of School, or the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy within which the School sits. The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
