Foundation student life
Discover what it's like to be a King's Foundations student
When you start the King's International Foundation Programme, you’ll get access to a range of personalised support, social activities and more.
You’re guaranteed* a place in a King’s residence for the duration of your studies with King’s Foundations.
Our residences are located throughout London, and we have space for over 5,300 students at King’s Residences — plus access to additional University of London accommodation.
We offer a range of accommodation types, including:
If you hold an offer for the King's International Foundation Programme, you will receive an email when applications for King’s Residences open. This is usually in spring (April to May) before you join us in September. We recommend that you apply as soon as possible to have the best chance of securing your preferred residence. Applicants who apply later in the cycle are not guaranteed accommodation, we highly recommend you apply for your King's International Foundation Programme by the ‘priority deadline’ to receive an offer in time and be ready to apply for accommodation.
*To be guaranteed a space, you must apply for a room in a King’s residence by the deadline.
You’ll be allocated a Personal Tutor at the beginning of your King's International Foundation Programme year. This is an academic member of staff who will take an active interest in your academic progress and university experience and is concerned for your general welfare.
You will have regular tutorials together where you will have the opportunity to ask for advice on:
If your Personal Tutor cannot help directly, they will be able to give you advice on who you might want to speak to instead.
The mission of King's Foundations is to help you make the most of your student experience and your new life in London. Your welfare, alongside enriching your learning, is our priority, and we're here to fully support your journey from before arrival to beyond graduation.
King's Foundations’ dedicated Student Experience team will help you meet your classmates, participate in extra-curricular activities and settle into life at King's.
The team will run a programme of events and activities for you to make the most of your time spent at King’s. You will become part of an inclusive and vibrant community with opportunities to engage with fellow students from your pathway and beyond while exploring London and what it has to offer.
The team will also signpost you to wider King's initiatives, activities and King’s College London Students’ Union (KCLSU) societies that you will have access to from day one.
Our dedicated Faculty Well-being Advisor can support you during your time on the programme. You will be able to book a one-on-one appointment to discuss any challenges you are facing, how they are affecting you, and what support is available for you.
You can also be signposted to further support, such as counselling, mental health support or money and housing advice, and will have access to the full range of support services at King’s.
Students under the age of 18 are considered a child under British law (Children Act, 1989). This means that King’s has social, moral and legal obligations to safeguard the wellbeing and safety of ‘children’ involved in any King’s activities.
Our Safeguarding Policy outlines our responsibility to keep all students under the age of 18 safe and ensure that your living arrangements are safe and secure.
This means that if you’re under the age of 18 at the time you enrol in the King’s International Foundation Programme or Pre-sessional course, there are a few things that you need to do before you arrive.
As part of the King’s safeguarding policy, students under the age of 18 must either:
If you choose to live in a King’s Residence, you will be grouped in the same accommodation blocks as other students under 18 years of age. These residences have extra welfare and personal support for you.
If you’re still under 18 when you start your first year of undergraduate degree at King’s, you will also be guaranteed accommodation in a King's Residence.
You will need to submit a Parent/Legal Guardian Agreement to Study form U18.
If you choose to live in private accommodation, you will need to provide evidence to King’s that you will be living with a parent or legal guardian. We cannot permit you to live in private accommodation if your parent or legal guardian does not live with you.
If you cannot demonstrate that you will be living with a parent or legal guardian in private accommodation, you must apply for a place in King’s Residences. You will also need to submit a Parent/Legal Guardian Agreement to Study form U18.
Please note: if you don’t wish to stay in a King’s Residence and cannot demonstrate that you will be living with a parent or legal guardian, then it is the responsibility of King’s to withdraw your offer to your chosen King’s International Foundation Programme or Pre-sessional course. This is because King’s does not act in loco parentis (in the place of a parent) towards its students. Therefore, King’s must be assured of your safety and safeguarding at all times.
