Cultural Competency

We define Cultural Competency as the ability to view the world through the lens of other people – in all their diversity.

In 2021, King's established Cultural Competency as part of the College’s Internationalisation Strategy, in which cultural competency is one of the two core values at King’s.

Based in the Department of Interdisciplinary Humanities, Cultural Competency serves the whole King’s community. We develop and deliver a wide range of student and staff modules to meet professional and academic developmental needs in Cultural Competency and we do this with our innovative co-creation ethos.

Our modules equip our students with culturally competent knowledge, attitudes and skills that are required to thrive in an increasingly global society. They also enable and empower staff, both academics and professionals included, to provide world-class education and services.

The diverse expertise we galvanise covers arts and humanities, sociology, cultural studies, applied linguistics, education, and healthcare. We are rapidly becoming a research powerhouse, generating both new knowledge and new ways to transform local and international communities.

What we see depends on where we stand. We cannot seek to solve problems around us or indeed the global problems we seek to solve if we cannot see the perspectives of the other.

Cultural Competency Kickstarter

The Cultural Competency Kickstarter is an online experience for King’s staff and students that you can complete at your own pace on KEATS.

This course will empower you to critically reflect on understanding your own identity, how you relate to others, and how you can make a positive difference at King’s and in the wider world.

How is Cultural Competency impacting King's?

As part of 'A College-wide educational endeavour to shape a culturally competent King’s', Dr Alice Hazard and Dr Edward Ademolu gathered data to build a picture of the impact of Cultural Competency.

Supported by the Race Equity & Inclusive Education Fund (REIEF), the evaluation project explores the extent to which staff and students understand Cultural Competency and their experiences of its initiatives.
