Helping realise the educational potential of refugee students

King’s alumna Monica Malik (Geography, 1992) has always valued the importance of education and wanted to make a difference to students who have experienced barriers in reaching their full potential due to forced displacement. In 2018, she established the Dr Monica Malik Refugee Bursary at King’s to support postgraduate students from refugee or humanitarian protection backgrounds.

780 Monica
If you have an education, whatever happens, you have some form of supporting yourself. Not everyone is lucky enough to have this access. I’ve always wanted to make a difference – to give back. I want to help people who have experienced challenges, to give them the skills and tools to support themselves and make improvements to their lives. Education can do that.– Dr Monica Malik, King’s alumna (Geography, 1992)

Driven by a desire to make a positive difference to others, Monica initially supported the King’s Sanctuary scholarships to help support undergraduates with refugee or forced migrant status. She then set up the Dr Monica Malik Sanctuary Bursary for postgraduate students from a refugee or humanitarian background.

Through the bursary, Monica wants to help refugee students achieve their dream of obtaining a postgraduate degree and give them hope. ‘I’ve had a lot of kindness in my life. I think it’s important to do the same for others. To feel that they are not alone and that there is someone to support them’, she says.

Supporting the students through the bursary is also rewarding for Monica. ‘It has been so meaningful for me to get to know the students that I’ve helped and to hear their stories. It’s very moving to have that connection.’

The current bursary recipient thanked Monica for the opportunities that her generous donation has provided them with, particularly the ability to prioritise focusing on their studies. Commenting on Monica’s deep understanding of the barriers refugees face when accessing education, the recipient expressed gratitude for the huge difference the bursary has made to their life and time at King’s.

I want to thank you and share my appreciation of your generous idea to support refugees in their studies. Your gift enables me to start my new life here in the UK with less stress and with more concentration. Studying my favourite subject in one of the world’s best universities allows me to feel normal in my new country. This would be much more of a struggle without your financial support.– Dr Monica Malik Refugee Bursary recipient
