YTL Annual Lecture 2025: Professor David Enoch
Strand Building, Strand Campus, London
YTL Centre for Politics, Philosophy and Law is delighted to invite Professor David Enouch, University of Oxford to deliver the YTL Annual Lecture 2024, entitled 'Why Isn’t (Purely) Epistemic Autonomy of Value?'
Abstract
With some practical decisions, it is important to make them oneself rather than outsource to others, even if others are somewhat more likely to make the decision that is better (including for oneself). When it comes to forming beliefs, though, this doesn’t seem to be the case – it’s never epistemically justified to insist on forming the belief using only one’s own devices, while acknowledging that relying on another is much more likely to get one to the truth. What best explain this difference – arguably, when it comes to the value of autonomy – between the practical and the epistemic domain? Answering this question, it turns out, is not only of interest in itself. It also helps in teaching general lessons about autonomy.

About the Centre:
The Yeoh Tiong Lay Centre for Politics, Philosophy & Law was founded in 2014 as a focal point for interdisciplinary research in law from the perspective of both philosophy and politics. Based in The Dickson Poon School of Law, the Centre has close links with King’s departments of Philosophy and Political Economy.
The Centre fosters interdisciplinary research involving politics, philosophy, and law within King's, while simultaneously bridging the gap between these academic disciplines and public decision-making. It strives to illuminate the most pressing questions of our time through the application of rigorous interdisciplinary thought, and to engage policymakers and the wider public in an ongoing conversation on how to create a better society.
