The UK and Germany have a long history of cooperation on matters of defence. And yet, while this cooperation is long-standing, it is not as deep as defence cooperation between Germany and the Netherlands, or as the UK and France.

Over the past year, the Policy Institute in cooperation with DGAP and the Hanns Seidel Foundation have carried out a research project exploring how defence cooperation between Berlin and London could be strengthened and identifying areas where this would be most beneficial. Following the publication of papers on UK-German defence capabilities, industrial cooperation, defence innovation, nuclear arms control and 5G, this event marks the launch of the final report.

Join us for a discussion on UK-Germany defence cooperation, the extent to which it can help strengthen European defence, and paths forward for bilateral defence cooperation in light of the Integrated Review.

Panel:

  • Dr Benedict Wilkinson, Director of Research, the Policy Institute at King’s College London (chair)
  • Sophia Becker, Research Fellow for US Security and Defense Policy, DGAP
  • Christian Schmidt MP, Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, former Parliamentary State Secretary for Defence
  • Dr Ulrike Franke, Senior Policy Fellow, European Council on Foreign Relations
