Military involvement in Brazilian politics dates back to the origins of the Brazilian Republic itself. Academia and civil society alike are beginning to question the potential implications of these levels of militarization within a democracy, especially in a country still under the shadows of a military regime (1964-1985) and that is seeing an increasing presence of its military in power today. This interdisciplinary conference will examine how Brazil’s military has come to hold such a contentious position within the country’s socio-political history and how this can help us advance the fields of civil, military and political relations.
The conference will be held over two days, from 16.00 (BST) on the 27th and 28th May. The conference panels will discuss the Brazilian military in historical perspective, the Brazilian military in the social imaginary, institutions, domestic, and foreign policy, and critical methodological approaches. On the second day of the conference, we will be holding a series of parallel discussion rooms open to audience participation.
Contact Hannah Brown or Dr Anna Grimaldi for further information.
