An interdisciplinary conference

This conference will bring together scholars working on modernism and sound drawn from literary studies, sound studies, musicology, film studies, media studies and beyond. We welcome a full range of approaches to modernism and sound, as you will see from our programme, and our goal is to come together to investigate the intersections (and tensions) between cultural, political and aesthetic methodologies and to develop shared terminologies and frames of reference with which to explain them.

We are honoured to host keynote speakers Professor Claire Davison (Université Sorbonne-Nouvelle) and Professor Alex Goody (Oxford Brookes University). Professor Davison’s talk is entitled: ‘Entente: Sound Diplomacy and trans-European Wavelengths in the early years of broadcasting’; and Professor Goody’s: ‘Sounding (out) Gertrude Stein – feminist politics and poetics of sound in the avant-garde’.

The conference will also feature a performance essay from artist and academic Ella Finer, entitled: ‘Or sometimes, just a spiral stair: a performance essay (with dreams) on the emancipatory acoustics of rooms’.
