LGBTQ+ older adults in social care

Online

Dr Jolie Keemink, Dr Jason Schaub and Martin Wells will discuss the CIRCLE and LOASCA projects in relation to social care for LGBTQ+ adults.

Dr Jolie Keemink (she/her) is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Health Services Studies (CHSS) at The University of Kent. Jolie is a creative and ambitious early career social care researcher with extensive experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods, and working with minoritised groups across the age spectrum, from infants to care home residents. Jolie currently leads the CIRCLE project (Creating Inclusive Residential Care for LGBTQ+ Elders), funded by ARC KSS, which aims to support residential care providers for older people to be more inclusive for LGBTQ+ people. She has also worked on various other projects on LGBTQ+ inclusion, for example an RCT testing an LGBTQ+ training package for children’s social workers (LYPSA project ), and a project examining the role of care commissioners in the promotion of LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Dr Jason Schaub is currently an Associate Professor in Social Work, and Director of PGR for the School of Social Policy at the University of Birmingham. His teaching and research examine gender and sexuality, leadership in social work, and children and families social work. He is co-chair of the UK regional network for International Partnership for Queer Youth Resilience (INQYR) and previously chair of Sexuality in Social Work interest group, and is a founding member of European Social Work Research Association. His research explores gender and sexuality, particularly focussing on LGBTQ+ young people and how professionals support them, using evidence-based methodologies and mixed methods. The LOASCA: Lgbtq+ Older Adult Social Care Assessment study addresses significant knowledge gaps about Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer (LGBTQ+) older (60+) people’s adult social care service experiences in England. The study examines how social care workers in England (workers and professionals employed by local authorities in social care departments) engage with sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) during assessments and will also gather the social care experiences of older LGBTQ+ adults, particularly how they perceive their SOGI has been considered within these assessments.

Jason and Jolie will be joined by PPI contributor and co-researcher Martin Wells, who was involved in both the CIRCLE project and the LOASCA project. Martin will discuss his experience on both projects as a PPI contributor.
