The Latin American Security Research Group and the Latin American Security Programme at RUSI (Royal United Services Institute) are delighted to be hosting the Chief of Naval Staff of the Brazilian Navy, Staff Admiral José Augusto Vieira da Cunha de Menezes, for a lecture about Brazilian Navy Challenges & Perspectives.

This will be a unique opportunity to hear from the Chief of Naval Staff of the Brazilian Navy himself at a public event reflecting current status and perspectives of the Brazilian Navy.

The lecture will be introduced by Dr Carlos Solar, Senior Research Fellow at RUSI and moderated by Dr Vinicius Mariano de Carvalho. Professor Geoffrey Till will be the discussant of the lecture.

Speaker Bio:

Admiral José Augusto Vieira da Cunha de Menezes graduated at the Brazilian Naval Academy in 1983. Duringhis career he has being Commanding Officer of the Minesweepers Ship “Araçatuba” and the Destroyer “Pará”. In 2008 he was assigned to the Inter-American Defense Board, in the United States. In 2012, he was promoted to Rear-Admiral, with the role of Head of the Logistic Section on the General Staff and later as Commander of the 1st Fleet Division and Secretary of the Interministerial Comission for Sea Resources. As Vice-Admiral, he was the Chief of Staff of Commander of the Brazilian Navy and the Commander of the 1st Naval District. In 2019, he became the Commander in Chief of the Fleet, and was promoted to Admiral, in January 2020, holding the position of Head of Navy Materiel.

In December 2022, he was appointed the Chief of Naval Staff.
