King’s Experts Series: Digital Technology & Mental Health

Mental health faces a crisis. It is estimated one in eight people, or almost a billion people around the world, suffer from mental ill health. By 2030, it is projected that mental health conditions will become the leading cause of disease burden globally, with untold social and economic costs.

This has caused a significant shift in thinking in how mental healthcare should be delivered, from ‘diagnose and treat’ to ‘predict and prevent’. This requires the catalytic force of newer technologies to drive forwards an evolution in mental healthcare. Technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning can be used to develop digital tools and platforms that can predict who may become unwell and to develop interventions focussed on individuals.

Technology has always intersected with the human body: the food that we eat, the medicine we take, the goods we consume and all the materials that make up our environment were all, at one time or another, based on technological innovation.

Our panellists are leading in this field and are pioneering research at King’s. You will hear from:

  • Chair - Professor Richard Trembath (Medicine, 1981): Senior Vice-President (Health and Life Sciences); Executive Director for King’s Health Partners

  • Professor Fay Bound Alberti: Professor in Modern History at King’s Faculty of Arts & Humanities; Director of Centre of Technology and the Body at King’s Digital Futures Institute; UKRI Future Leaders Fellow

  • Professor Matthew Hotopf CBE (PhD Psychiatry, 2000): Executive Dean of the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience; Professor of General Hospital Psychiatry; CBE for services to Psychiatric Research (2018)

  • Professor Dame Til Wykes: Head of School for Mental Health & Psychological Sciences at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience; Professor of Clinical Psychology and Rehabilitation; editor for the Journal of Mental Health

Attendees are invited to pose questions on all topics related to how digital technology can support mental health in this exclusive live webinar.
