Professor Wendy Hall
Eating our hearts out: the science (and angst) of healthy eating
Abstract
In this inaugural lecture, Professor Wendy Hall will explore the evolving landscape of nutrition science, highlighting the critical role of diet in preventing cardiovascular diseases and potentially in reducing symptoms of dermatological conditions. With a focus on research translatable to public health strategies and food industry, the lecture will examine how metabolic studies, dietary intervention efficacy trials, nutritional epidemiology, and basic science can together shape our understanding of optimal dietary patterns for better health outcomes. Professor Hall will discuss the challenges in translating scientific evidence into practical dietary guidelines and behaviour change, as well as opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. The lecture will also reflect on key milestones in Professor Hall’s career and the importance of a supportive research community.
Biography
Professor Wendy Hall is based in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, School of Life Course & Population Sciences at King’s College London, where for the past 20 years she has led research on diet and cardiometabolic health. A registered nutritionist (RNutr, Association for Nutrition), she has secured significant research funding from UKRI, non-profit food organisations, and charities mainly to conduct randomised controlled trials of dietary interventions. Professor Hall has editorial roles for leading nutrition journals, including the British Journal of Nutrition and European Journal of Nutrition, also acting as an editorial advisory board member for the British Nutrition Foundation journal, Nutrition Bulletin. She is an active member of the Nutrition Society, serving as Honorary Programmes Officer, and is dedicated to advancing evidence-based nutritional science through research and teaching. Other roles include departmental Postgraduate Research Co-ordinator, Deputy Head of Nutrition & Dietetics, academic lead for the Metabolic Research Unit, and she chairs the Nutrition & Industry working Group and the School Athena Swan DDI working group.

Trials and Tribu(te)lations in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease comprises two incurable and disabling conditions, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. The management of IBD has undergone a revolution in the last 25 years with the advent of a raft of new drugs and a shift in management strategies that have resulted in improved outcomes. In this lecture, I will describe my development as an IBD clinician and a clinical trialist, and the opportunities that have been afforded to me my being part of an innovative and dedicated IBD unit and through my collaborators at KCL (as well as some brief diversions into the world of IBS).

Peter Irving was appointed as a consultant gastroenterologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ in 2009. He trained in medicine at Cambridge University and The London Hospital Medical College and then specialised in gastroenterology, undertaking his specialist training in North East Thames before moving to Melbourne, Australia for an IBD fellowship.
He has a large IBD practice and a number of active research interests in translational research, clinical IBD and clinical trials. He has published widely in IBD including several books and book chapters and over 200 peer-reviewed articles. He has formerly been a member of the BSG IBD Committee, Chair of the Education Committee of ECCO and ECCO e-Learning Ambassador and previously sat on the UEG Education Committee.
