Abstract:

All dental restorations will ultimately suffer deterioration and degradation in clinical service. While some restorations will inevitably require replacement, it is suggested that many deteriorating, yet serviceable, restorations may be given extended longevity through repair procedures.

This lecture provides an overview of current knowledge and understanding of the clinical management of defective dental restorations and encourages clinicians to shift, if not already doing so, to considering minimally invasive interventions for managing deteriorating restorations.

The repair of such restorations is a minimally interventive means of extending the longevity of the restoration without sacrificing intact, healthy tooth structure and is in the best interest of patients in terms of biological cost and cost effectiveness. The indications, importance and benefits of restoration repair, together with details of criteria for repair, and operative techniques aimed at conserving sound tooth structure will be provided. Restoration replacement should be only considered as a last resort.
