Exploring living with dementia - LGBTQ+ perspectives using Photovoice

Online

There remains a need to hear more first-hand experiences of how it is to live with dementia as an LGBTQ+ person, especially through the use of creative and innovative methods. Photovoice is a research method that asks people to take photographs of aspects of their everyday lives and to accompany these with narratives that give ‘voice’ to the meanings and descriptions of what the photos represent. This method has not previously been used with LGBTQ+ people living with dementia.

John Hammond (he/him) is a PhD student at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. He has recently completed a pilot study with a group of five LGBTQ+ people living with dementia that investigated the acceptability, value and challenges of the Photovoice method. He will present his findings alongside Daithi (they/them) who was a participant co-researcher on this pilot study project.
