Entering the ring: the rise of nursing unions in Denmark, Britain and Canada in the 1970s
Bush House, Strand Campus, London

Join us in person or online for an exciting guest lecture by well-known nursing historian and policy scholar Professor Sioban Nelson. In this lecture, she will be presenting material from her current book project, A General History of Nursing Through Material Culture. The book tackles the history of nursing in a series of objects from thirteenth century hospital seals to steamer trunks and boxing gloves. This talk will centre on the boxing gloves of the prominent Danish nursing leader, Kirsten Stallknecht, to explore the rising militancy of nurses in the JKLMs, and the way nursing associations in Denmark, Canada, and the United Kingdom navigated the rapidly changing industrial climate of the era in each jurisdiction.
