Join an event with Professor Simon Miles of Duke University discussing his new book Engaging the Evil Empire: Washington, Moscow, and the Beginning of the End of the Cold War with Dr Sergey Radchenko, Cardiff University

Chair: Flavia Gasbarri, King's College London

Speaker: Professor Simon Miles, Duke University

Discussant: Dr Sergey Radchenko, Cardiff University

Engaging the Evil Empire covers five critical years of Cold War history when Soviet leaders attempted to reduce tensions between the USSR and the USA, with the aim of giving themselves economic breathing room to ensure domestic political stability and prioritise domestic over foreign policy expenditure. Miles's bold narrative shifts the focus of Cold War historians away from exclusive attention on Washington to three years of back-channel communiqués and internal strategy debates in Moscow, as well as Prague and East Berlin.

Simon Miles joined the faculty of the Sanford School of Public Policy as an Assistant Professor in 2017. He is a diplomatic historian whose research agenda explores the causes and mechanics of cooperation between states. At Duke, Simon teaches US foreign policy, Cold War international history, and grand strategy; supervises students working on projects in the field of international relations, broadly defined; and organizes the American Grand Strategy Program's History and International Security speakers series.
