Sally King, Global Health and Social Medicine PhD Candidate at King’s College London, speaks about her research into biomedical, critical (feminist), and patient descriptions of PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome).
Her research revealed major gaps in knowledge regarding menstrual physiology, even within 'expert' academic and clinical discourses. Information regarding the purpose of menstruation and its key physiological processes (ovulation, spontaneous decidualisation, and menstruation) are conspicuously absent from nearly all school and medical educational resources. This omission has directly led to problematic biomedical and societal depictions of PMS. It has also had a negative impact on patient outcomes, gender inequalities, and the quality of biomedical research.
