Rust will perform their unreleased album ‘Masar’, a musical interpretation of poetry by the talented Lebanese poet Jana Salloum. Jana’s poetry explores the path of the Arab woman, delves into her world, raises existential questions, and addresses the battle for identity. Rust interpreted the poem with rich melodies, intriguing rhythms, and a harmonious blend of electronic and traditional elements. The album invites the listener to experience the diverse powerful emotions it evokes, and the meaning behind the advocacy it leads. Petra’s vocals captivate the senses, and the warm tones of Hany’s Oud add depth and authenticity that flow through each track. The second part of the performance “Electric Wasla”, is 30 minute set customized for this event. This segment is based on the traditional Arabic musical form ‘Wasla’, which consists of several related classical compositions and improvisations all based on the same Maqam.

This event is organised by Rim Irscheid and part of six residencies with the ERC/UKRI-funded project Beyond 1932: Rethinking Musical Modernity in the Middle East and North Africa (1932 MUSCON). The project is funded by the EPSRC via the UKRI/EC HE Guarantee ERC scheme (funder Award Reference: EP/X022749/1) and based at the Music Department of King's College London.

About Rust رَست:

Rust is a Prague-based duo whose music blends the Arabic heritage of melody and poetry with a modern electronic sound. Combining elements of Arabic music with contemporary production and powerful vocals, Rust draws influence from the older generation of musical rebels, aiming to bridge the gap between legacy and modernity.

The project was cofounded in Beirut in 2020 by:

  • Petra Hawi – a Lebanese musician and vocalist
  • Hany Manja – a Syrian musician, Oud player and electronic music producer.
