This event, hosted by the Cyber Security Research Group, features Gaven Smith, former Chief Technology Officer of GCHQ, discussing artificial intelligence and its application in national security.

Expect a wide-ranging conversation that includes how and why AI is becoming a critical technology for our future security; the ethical, legal, leadership, skills, and governance considerations involved; and the importance of enablers (e.g. governance and standards). We will also discuss what the future might hold for AI applications in national security, the national security implications of AI, and the importance of 'whole-of-system' and inclusive approaches to transformation.

This event is free and open to the public, but spaces are limited. Light refreshments will be provided during the event. Early registration is recommended to secure your place.

About the speaker:

Gaven Smith was the Director General for Technology and Chief Technology Officer at GCHQ until late 2023. In his seven years as CTO, he was responsible for the research into and development of a wide range of critical UK national security capabilities.

Before that, Gaven held a variety of technology leadership roles that invested in cutting-edge technology to support GCHQ’s rapidly changing mission. Gaven is now a Professor of Cyber Security at the University of Manchester, a technology advisor, a Non-Executive Director, and an active advocate for online safety.
