King’s Admissions Office is committed to the principles of our Fair Admissions Policy and to providing useful information to help you plan your application. We also want to help you understand our selection process and try and anticipate some of the questions you may have.
On this page you will find links to a variety of useful information about the application process, policies and general guidance.
If you have any questions which aren’t answered here or on our website you can contact our King’s Advisors for further assistance.
King's College London is committed to providing a high quality admissions process in line with our admissions policies for all applicants. However, we recognise that there may be occasions when applicants to the university may have cause for complaint. The Applicant Complaints Policy outlines how applicants can submit a complaint and in what circumstances these will be investigated.
Our Applicant Data Collection Notice explains what data we collect from you once you have started an application to King’s, how we use it and who we share it with. For more information please see our Applicant Data Collection Notice.
The Admissions Office will treat all personal data in accordance with King's Data Protection Policy. We will only communicate directly with the applicant (or designated Agent) and not with your teacher, parents or guardians unless we have specific written permission from you that we may do so.
If you are applying for an undergraduate course through UCAS for undergraduate entry, there will be an opportunity in the application process for you to name another person who can then act on your behalf and speak directly to the university if required. This may be a parent, teacher, or other adult.
To help us in protecting your data, please ensure that when contacting the Admissions Office you do so through your King's Apply account wherever possible. If you contact us by telephone, please be ready to answer some security questions.
See our entry requirements webpage for information about which courses require aptitude tests to be taken in addition to other requirements.
Detailed guidance as to how each test is used in the selection process will be available on our course pages.
In August each year we will provide detailed information for those undergraduate applicants awaiting their exam results on our website.
UCAS applicants can find out more about confirmation and adjustment from the UCAS website.
King’s is happy to consider you if you wish to take a year out to gain some specific experience, earn funds in preparation for your studies or generally broaden your interests. However, deferrals may not be granted on competitive health courses such as medicine or dentistry. In these areas, each request will be reviewed individually, and may only be permitted for extenuating circumstances (such as health related reasons). We suggest that you apply in the final year of secondary or further education, indicating in your UCAS application that you will be deferring entry and outlining your general plans in your personal statement. You are also welcome to apply to King’s towards the beginning of your gap year after completing your qualifications.
A deferral of two academic years will usually only be considered if an applicant is completing compulsory national or military service which exceeds 12 months. We can only allow a deferral of one academic year for compulsory military service for medicine and dentistry applicants. Applicants will need to provide evidence that they will be undertaking compulsory service along with their deferral request, and all requests should be made via King’s Apply.
In rare circumstances King’s courses may become unavailable, or change name or content from year to year. If you have a deferred offer and such changes occur King’s will contact you to make you aware as soon as possible through King’s Apply, and discuss any options for you.
We are unable to defer conditional offers. All conditions must be met before we can defer your place.
If you have been awarded funding or a scholarship for a specific academic year there is no guarantee that same funding will be available if you defer, and you may have to re-apply for the academic year in which you intend to join. Please check the information on your funding award or scholarship carefully, and contact the Student Funding team if you are unsure.
If you require a visa to study, please note that your CAS and visa is assigned to a specific start date and programme. If you change your start date you may have to apply for a new CAS or visa in the year that you wish to study.
Your fee status is assessed at the time of application based on the information you have provided to date, and takes into consideration a specific start date. If you defer your course start date, be aware that this could affect your fee status (which determines your eligibility for lower tuition fees and access to student finance support). The Admissions Office reserves the right to re-assess your status for your deferred start date.
If English is not your first language we may have asked you to take an English language test. Please note that certain tests are only valid for two years. If a deferral would make your English language test out of date, we reserve the right to amend your offer to a conditional offer based on demonstrating your current proficiency with a new test. Please see our English language requirements webpage for further information.
If you have applied for King’s accommodation or made arrangements for disability or dyslexia support, you may need to re-apply or update your arrangements for your new start date. Please contact the relevant service for further information.
If you have received an offer for an undergraduate degree course, you will only be asked for a deposit if you are:
Overseas (International) fee-paying student
AND
only once you hold an unconditional firm offer
You can find details of deadlines, terms and conditions, and methods of payment in your offer letter.
Overseas fee-paying students for Medicine and Dentistry courses may be asked for a deposit payment while Conditional Firm. Please refer to the course page for further information.
If English is not your first language, please see our English language entry requirements for undergraduate students.
Information on College-wide Equality & Diversity policies at King's for staff & students is available from our Equality & Diversity Unit.
You may also wish to read our Admissions Policy, and specific information for applicants at the bottom of this page.
You can also find out more about the work of our Widening Participation team.
King’s understands that students and schools will want to challenge the grades awarded for one or more qualifications where this seems not to match the student’s potential and performance during the relevant examination(s). While Awarding Bodies often work to expedite the process for reviewing grades and issuing re-marks, this can take a little time and mean students are unable to meet the offer conditions by the deadline specified in their offer letter from King’s.
If you have not met the terms of your offer, but are requesting a re-mark of one or more of your qualifications, we ask that you get in touch with us via King’s Apply to confirm this as soon as possible.
Wherever we can, we will hold your place until 31 August, and you will be entitled to enrol on the course if your re-marks mean you meet the offer conditions by this date. In some cases, such as Medicine (where the number of students we can enrol is strictly limited), we may not be able to offer you a place for direct entry even if you receive a re-mark by 31 August – in which case we will generally offer you a place for deferred entry in the next academic year. If you do not receive your re-marks until after 31 August, please get in touch with us via King’s Apply as soon as you can to discuss your options – we will still try to accommodate your offer if possible, and would normally offer a place for deferred entry if we are unable to enrol you this year.
The university charges two different levels of tuition fees for our undergraduate degree courses. The Home tuition fee is lower than the Overseas tuition fee.
This is due to the way higher education is funded in England. Your fee status may also affect your eligibility for certain funding or scholarships, and sometimes for a particular course (usually where linked to National Health Service funding/places).
Our fee status assessments are based on the eligibility categories provided by UKCISA (the UK Council for International Student Affairs), which can be viewed on their website.
As regulations regarding fee status can be quite complex, King's does not undertake fee status assessments before receiving a formal application for admission. However, when you apply, your application form will ask you for certain information which will help us undertake an initial assessment, such as your nationality, permanent address and your education history.
If current applicants would like to query their fee status, they should do so by contacting the Admissions Office using the King's Apply portal. Messages and documents must be communicated through the portal in order for us to keep an accurate record of your correspondence.
Please ensure that all fee status queries are resolved before accepting an offer, paying any deposit, or enrolling on the course, as there are only a very few circumstances where your fee status can change during your course of study.
The Admissions Office recognises that there may be circumstances where fee status decisions may require review following enrolment.
There are strict circumstances in which a review can be requested. These criteria and the details of the review process can be found in our policy document.
If current students feel that they meet the criteria and would like to contest their fee status, they must complete the Fee Status Review Form and submit this, along with scans of supporting evidence to feestatusreview@kcl.ac.uk.
Please note that the feestatusreview@kcl.ac.uk inbox is only used for fee status review requests for currently enrolled students. We are therefore unable to respond to queries relating to prospective applicant fee status, applicant fee status, tuition fee invoice queries, enrolment processes, student loans or student funding opportunities.
Admission to a large majority of King's courses is highly competitive, and this means that unfortunately a large number of applicants - even those who meet or exceed the minimum entry requirements for consideration - will regrettably be unsuccessful each year.
King's is committed to providing individual feedback to applicants who receive an unsuccessful decision. Initial feedback will be provided with any unsuccessful decision, but more individual feedback is available on request.
If you feel that you have met the minimum entry requirements for your application to be considered, but have not been offered a place on a competitive course, you are strongly encouraged to request feedback in the first instance. This will help you to better understand our decision. All requests for feedback should be made in writing within one month of the admissions decision being made, through your King's Apply account.
Some of our courses require students to attend an interview in order to assess qualities which might be harder to assess from your application form (or perhaps where an applicant is offering non-traditional qualifications). Please note that if a course uses interviews as part of their selection process, this does not mean that all applicants will be asked to attend an interview.
If you are invited to an interview you will be provided with further details about the expected interview format and guidance of when and where to report to. Please feel free to contact the Admissions Office through King's Apply if you have any concerns or questions in advance of the interview.
In particular, once you are aware of arrangements, it's important to contact the Admissions Office if you feel you will need reasonable adjustments to be made to enable you to visit the campus and/or participate in the interview or selection process: the sooner you can provide this information, the more time the Admissions Office has to make arrangements.
The exact format, content and assessment of interviews will depend on your course, and details will be provided in your invitation. However be assured that all interviews are underpinned by our Admissions Interview Policy.
In our mitigating circumstances pages you can find details of:
how the Admissions Office considers mitigating circumstances in the application process
and
how to notify King's of any mitigating circumstances affecting your studies, examinations, or other assessment (related to your admission)
It is important that any personal statement, research proposal, or other written materials submitted as part of an application are your own work, and King's may use similarity detection software to evaluate the originality of a piece of work.
Where applicants are applying through UCAS Undergraduate 'Apply' please note that UCAS informs all applicants of the importance of originality in Personal Statements and that they deploy similarity detection software on all statements submitted with an application. A copy of this guidance can be found on the UCAS website.
UCAS will notify King's of any personal statements deemed to have a level of similarity worthy of investigation.
If the College is considering making the applicant an offer, or inviting the applicant to an interview or selection day, we will not continue this action until we have investigated the validity of the personal statement further and contacting the applicant through King's Apply.
Please visit the King's College London's regulations pages for more details, including a Student A-Z guide to regulations.
Information on re-sits is available on our entry requirements webpage.
If specific work experience is required for your course, you can find this information under 'Personal statement' in the 'Entry requirements' section of the course webpage.
The Student Advice team provide an opportunity for student parents to register for additional support and updates. More information can be found on our Student Services webpages.
We strongly advise all care-experienced applicants to disclose this on their UCAS application form. This will not have a negative impact on your application and will allow admissions staff to take your full circumstances into consideration.
We also advise teachers to ensure this information is included in their student’s reference. It is helpful if this can inform universities of how long and how recently you were in care.
UCAS have put together a useful video explaining how to disclose your care experience on the application form, as well as the benefits of doing so.
For further details of King’s additional consideration and support for care-experienced applicants, we strongly recommend you read our Care Leavers information in full.
If you are estranged and applying to study at King’s, we strongly advise you to disclose this directly to us. This will allow admissions staff to take your circumstances into consideration and will not have a negative impact on your application. Guidance on support available for Estranged applicants at King’s can be found on our Estranged students webpage.
King's College London has a designated member of staff (pre-entry), who can assist estranged students with all aspects of the application process: you can talk about course choices, receive feedback on a draft personal statement, tips on interviews as well as guidance on King's other support services e.g. student funding or the disability services.
For more information please contact us on priority-groups@kcl.ac.uk.
See our advice for disabled applicants.
King’s College London is committed to attracting students from diverse social backgrounds who have the potential to succeed on our courses of study. It recognises that some applicants applying to the university may have a criminal record. Having access to education can be an important part of rehabilitation and having a criminal record is not an automatic bar to enrolment.
Applicants with a criminal record are encouraged to review the university’s policy and procedure on Criminal Record Declarations to understand when it is appropriate to disclose a criminal record, how and when to make a declaration and the steps that are taken to consider a criminal record as part of the offer-making and enrolment process.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss disclosing a criminal record after submitting an application please get in touch with the King’s Admissions Office via King’s Apply.
Advice: Our Student Advice team has provided further guidance about studying as a mature student.
Applications: Applicants with relevant work/life experience should apply through UCAS (who have specific guidance). Your application is considered on its own merits with relevant experience considered in place of formal qualifications where appropriate. However please note that many courses do require previous study and demonstrable high attainment in certain subject areas. We suggest that you contact the Admissions Office before applying with details of your academic background and appropriate experience.
Tip: If you are thinking of taking further qualifications with a view to applying in the future, you may want to consider Access to HE diplomas (where suitable) or ask the Admissions Office for advice.
King’s does not operate a minimum age requirement for the large majority of our courses, but applicants must be able to demonstrate the maturity and personal skills, as well as academic, in order to succeed on a university level course and benefit from a university education.
Offer holders who will be under 18 at the start of your course may be required – as a condition of your offer - to engage with the university before starting your course, to ensure appropriate arrangements are in place to support your time on campus.
An Agreement to Study Form U18 will need to be completed by the parent or legal guardian of the offer holder. The form will be sent to the offer holder via the King’s Apply portal.
There may however be age requirements on a number of our professional health courses (such as Nursing , Midwifery and Medicine) due to the clinical placements they contain. Applicants who would be under 18 at the start of these courses are encouraged to contact the Admissions Office for guidance.
Applicants who identify as trans may wish to be aware of this guidance on support and policies at King's:
In addition we know that some trans identifying applicants may have questions relating to how their gender and/or name or title is recorded and used specifically during the admissions process. If you would like further confidential guidance please feel free to contact the Admissions Manager (Operations) at admissions.confidential@kcl.ac.uk in the first instance.
Please note that students without right to work visas are not able to study courses with professional placements. Please visit our visa webpage for further information or advice.
We are preparing further guidance in this area, but in the meantime, please let us know if you have questions about any of the following:
