University education has a price and it’s essential that you make sure you are doing the right course - even if this means waiting a year. If you don’t find an option to suit you, think about taking a year out to work or travel and apply again.
The key to a productive and successful day in Clearing is preparation.
Watch our Top Tips video below and take a look at the information below to get ready for what could be a very daunting day.
Research
Universities will publish their 2024 Clearing vacancies in June, which is when you should start looking around. You should look at a variety of universities and a range of courses to come up with a list of potential back-up options. Make sure you consider the entry requirements and whether you are able to meet them – but keep in mind that these may change on A-level results day so you will need to recheck.
Clear desk clear mind
When you start to do your Clearing research, you’ll need to find a space to set up camp. It should be quiet and cool with access to the internet. Before A-level results day, write a list of Clearing phone numbers and the grades required for the courses you are interested in.
Get a good night's sleep
You could be feeling anything from excited to anxious the night before you get your exam results, but it’s important that you get your head down sooner than usual and have a good night’s sleep. After all, you will be setting your alarm for an early night as most Clearing call centres open at 08:00 (BST).
Don't necessarily take the first offer
If you need to find a place in Clearing, then A-level results day is your chance to shop around. Don’t feel like you have to accept the first offer you are given; you have time to speak to several universities and then pick the one that’s right for you.
Have two phones
During Clearing we would recommend that you have two phones on hand. You can use one phone to call universities and the other number to give out in case a university needs to call you back. This means you won’t miss any opportunities because you’re on the phone while a university is trying to reach you.
Know your nominated other
Universities want to speak to you in Clearing, not your parents or carers. However, if they will need to speak on your behalf, you must make sure they are listed as the nominated other on your UCAS application or the university won’t be able to talk to them.
If you need to add a nominated other, you must contact UCAS to do so.
You don't just need a place on a course, you might need a place to live
Clearing isn’t just about securing a place on a course - you should also think about whether you will easily get a place in university accommodation, if this is something you will need. Make sure you find out how to apply for accommodation and take this into consideration when you choose which university to study at.
Make sure you're free on the following Friday and Monday
If you’re looking for a place on a highly competitive course like the healthcare courses at King’s, you might need to go to the university for an interview at very short notice. It’s always best to clear Friday and Monday just in case you need to attend any last-minute interviews.
Don't be afraid to stop and take a gap year
Try not to worry
This is the most important thing of all. Use these tips to prepare, be calm and confident so you know what to do if you’re looking to use Clearing when you get your results. You’ll need to make an important decision, take your time, think it through and explore all your options because there will be options available to you, once you’ve had time to think and research.
