The Social Mobility and Widening Participation Department are proud to contribute to the King’s Sustainability Champions scheme.

Through the scheme (part of the NUS Green Impact) King’s has embedded environmental and social sustainability across the university. Staff are empowered to make positive changes within and beyond their own work environments. The scheme is modelled on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Our social mobility and widening participation strategy is aligned with three of them:

• Quality Education
• Reduced Inequalities
• Partnerships for the Goals

For the last three years, our department has received gold accreditation for our sustainability work. Widening participation actions linked to SDGs 4, 10 and 17 are also included in the accreditation process for all sustainability teams. This means that across King’s widening participation sustainability actions are carried out.

We are particularly proud of the following sustainability achievements:

• Setting-up an interest fee payment plan for child citizenship fees in collaboration with EdAid (SDGs 10 & 17)
• Being the first university to include a specific Latinx ethnicity code on all official monitoring forms and to have data on this underrepresented student group (SDG 10)
• Pioneering academic support for Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller students (SDGs 4 & 10)
• Prioritising student mental health and wellbeing within pre-entry programmes and data collection via a survey to all current students (SDGs 3 Good Health & Wellbeing, 10 & 17)
• Delivering more sustainable events using electronic registers and evaluation forms, reducing food waste, and promoting vegetarian and vegan options (SDGs 3 Good Health & Wellbeing & 13 Climate Action)
