Wondering if stackable microcredentials are right for you? Looking for more information about how they work? We’ve put together a list of useful questions and answers to help you learn more about our pioneering professional development and alternative to traditional postgraduate education.
If you haven't done so already, take a look at our stackable microcredentials webpage for general information. If you can’t find the information you’re looking for, please contact us at stackable-cpd@kcl.ac.uk. For details of specific modules, take a look at our professional courses online catalogue.
Traditional postgraduate programmes are curated by faculties at King’s to help students specialise in one area. You would study core modules and sometimes pick from a selection of optional modules.
Stackable microcredentials are for professionals with interests across academic fields or for those who might struggle to fit study around a busy schedule. You can pick modules from across our faculties and decide whether you study just one or stack credits to gain a professional development award.
Stackable microcredentials give you the freedom to pick from our extensive portfolio. However, you’ll need to check you meet the entry requirements which you can find in the description of each module.
All modules need a minimum number of students to run, and some cap the number of students that can enrol, so we can’t always guarantee places. We also review modules regularly which means modules might change.
If you’re working towards an award, your combination of modules will need to be approved. Our Professional Development team will guide you through this.
Our modules are offered in a variety of modes of study. You can study at our Strand campus or Waterloo campus, fully online via the King's E-learning and Teaching System (KEATS) or take a blended approach. You can find more details in each module description.
Most modules are worth either 15 or 30 credits. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work. You can take a break between modules or pause your studies if you need to. The Professional Development team will be able to advise you on the options and any implications this might have.
If you’re working towards an award, you’ll have to complete it within a certain time frame (take a look at the diagram on our stackable microcredentials page for details).
It’s likely other students will enrol on a particular module as part of the stackable framework. However, as many modules are part of traditional degree programmes, you’ll join existing groups and study alongside students studying for their postgraduate qualification.
Many modules are offered as part of our master’s programmes. As fees vary across different faculties and programmes, and from year to year, this is reflected in the cost of modules. Check the professional courses online catalogue for current prices.
If you’re studying individual modules, you won’t be eligible for a student loan. Check the government website for the latest information on funding.
You should apply for one module at a time via the King’s Apply portal. You’ll need to provide your details, including evidence that you meet the entry requirements. The Professional Development team will look at your application and communicate with you through the portal.
You’ll find start dates for individual modules in their descriptions. However, as the framework is flexible, you can start at any time of the year if you intend to stack modules towards an award.
No, you won’t need to attend an interview for modules. However, if you want to stack modules towards a PgCert, PgDip or MA/MSc, you’ll be invited to meet with the Programme Director to discuss your plans and decide on module choices that will help you achieve your ambitions. This could be in person or online.
We’ll assess you through a combination of coursework and examinations, as well as essays, practical reports, problem-based simulations, action plans, presentations, and articles/blogs. You can find more details in the individual module descriptions.
You’ll only be enrolled on a formal award route once you’ve completed a certain amount of credit and if you tell us you want to do this. The Professional Development team will guide you through this process.
Depending on the award you achieve, the title will be PgCert, PgDip, MA or MSc Professional Development. The balance of modules you studied and the focus of your research project will determine whether you achieve an Master of Arts (MA) or a Master of Science (MSc).
You’ll receive a digital certificate and digital badge for each module you complete. Digital badges can be displayed online and on social media platforms to showcase your competencies and easily verify your new skills and expertise.
If you complete a PgCert, PgDip or MA/MSc, you’ll also receive a formal certificate from King’s College London.
