Although some of the degree courses in the King's College London Department of Classics do not require knowledge of an ancient language, we at King's are committed to supporting all students who wish to study Ancient Greek and/or Latin, including those who have no prior experience of learning the languages.
We offer two Intensive Courses in Ancient Greek and Latin. These courses are six weeks long, with the option of studying either the first three week session (for absolute beginners) or the second three week session (for students at intermediate level).
Fees apply for these courses. For both in person and online, early bird discount of 5% available for applications made until the end of April 2025. After that, full prices apply.
Study the classical world not only in London, but also in Greece, Turkey, Italy and other Mediterranean lands – with all expenses paid by the King's Department of Classics.
Here in London, our students have unparalleled access to Greek and Roman antiquities – via the British Museum, City of London Museum, and Victoria and Albert Museum (among other places). But studying Archaic sculpture in Athens – or for that matter Roman wall-painting in Pompeii, as indeed Bronze Age archaeology in Cyprus – can give a very different perspective.
That’s why, thanks to the generous donation of a former student in 2013, the King's Department of Classics set up The Rumble Fund: each year, the fund pays for around 25 BA and MA students to visit Classical lands; most importantly, the costs of these field trips (which are carefully integrated within our department-taught modules) are fully covered by the Department.
King’s Rumble Lectures, from our annual Rumble Fund, are also available to watch on YouTube:
One of the highlights of the Classics calendar at King’s College London is the annual Greek Play.
Although classical drama has been performed at the college since the late nineteenth century, the Greek Play in its current form was inaugurated in 1953. King’s remains the only university in the country to perform a piece of Greek drama wholly or partially in the original language each and every academic year.
The play is overseen by national-touring theatre company Actors of Dionysus, ‘the UK’s leading interpreters of ancient Greek drama’ who have been performing Greek tragedy, comedy and new writing inspired by myth since 1993.
The Greek Play is performed in the professionally equipped 450-seat Greenwood Theatre, and is directed, designed, choreographed, produced, and performed by current King's students. It is a great opportunity to engage with the language, style, and subject matter of Greek drama in a unique, immersive way. Students who take part in the play often go on to leadership positions in the Classics Society and beyond, while a number of the play’s alumni have pursued professional theatre careers.
