The department is structured into two primary research themes:

1. Biostatistics

This theme focuses on developing and applying statistical methodologies in mental health research. Key areas include:

• Prediction Modelling and Personalised Medicine: Creating models to predict health outcomes and tailor treatments to individual patients.
• Causal Evaluation and Analysis of Therapeutic Mechanisms: Investigating the underlying causes of diseases and the mechanisms through which treatments exert their effects.
• Psychometrics & Measurement Lab: Developing and refining tools to measure psychological variables accurately.
• Life Course Research: Studying how factors throughout a person's life influence health outcomes.
• Mental Health Clinical Trial Statistics and Methodology: Designing and analysing clinical trials to improve mental health interventions.

1. Health Informatics

This theme is dedicated to translational bioinformatics and its application to complex diseases. The team comprises data and computer scientists, research software engineers, and clinical and bio-informaticians. Their work includes:

• Utilising 'Omics Data: Integrating genomic and other biological data to understand disease mechanisms.
• Electronic Health Records (EHR) Analysis: Leveraging EHRs for research and improving patient care.
• Exposome Studies: Examining how environmental exposures affect health.
• Smartphone and Wearable Technology: Using mobile devices to monitor health in real-time and provide tailored care.
