King's Global Summer Exchanges are a great opportunity for all students - but especially those who aren't able to study abroad during the academic year, whether this is for personal reasons or because study abroad isn't offered as part of their degree. Just like our term time exchanges, the tuition fee will be waived for King's students nominated to any of the programmes, as a result of our partnerships with institutions worldwide.

Information on the programmes and courses that were offered this year can be found in the ‘Where can I go and what can I study?’ below, however, please note, there is no guarantee that the programmes and courses offered this year, will be the same in 2025.

Only students registered, and in attendance on a King's programme, at the point of application can apply. Students from any discipline, any year group can apply to the programme. Final years, postgraduates and students with placements in the summer should only ensure that there is no overlap with any internships, projects or graduation ceremonies (where applicable).

Partner universities in China restrict Chinese nationals from applying and admission will not be accepted. King’s do not have any authority over admission decisions. Other universities may have entry requirements and these will be listed on the partner pages.

Students can apply for any of our partner universities listed for application. There are some programmes which may have pre-requisites or special admission requirements, but these would be listed on the partner page.

Please research all options before submitting your application, as some universities do offer places to PG/PhD students, whilst other do not. It is your responsibility to research this information before applying.

We haven’t received information from all of our partners yet, therefore, if the page of a particular partner you are interested in has not been updated, it may be due to one of two reasons, either our office has not yet received information on the partners summer programme, or the programme is no longer an option for King’s students. In either case, the page will be updated accordingly.

Students can opt in for classes that are outside of their usual discipline, provided that there is no requirement by the partner that they have prior knowledge in the subject area chosen.

Tuition fees:

King's students do not pay tuition fees to the partner university if they attend via the exchange. Students should therefore expect to pay travel expenses (such as flights, visas, vaccinations) and accommodation fees. There may also be other fees such as social programmes, admin fees that students would look into themselves as part of their research and preparation to attend the programme.

Funding:

The Global Summer Exchange Award award is intended only for the participants of the Global Summer Exchange programme. The idea is for students to share media (videography, music) from their time abroad, to promote further mobility. There is no additional eligibility criteria, however, we particularly encourage applications from students from under-represented backgrounds who will be participating in the exchange.

Students usually receive awards in the region of £250 to £700, but this is dependent on the location visited, the costs involved to attend the program and the content type delivered. Award amounts are subject to change year on year and will depend on the number of applications we receive.

There is also funding available through the Broadening Horizons Award is available to students successful with their summer exchange application. Please note that if you are offered a grant through Broadening Horizons, you may not actually receive the money until May/June.

Students who submit an application for earlier rounds and apply for a Broadening Horizons Award will not hear about the outcome of the grant application until the Broadening Horizons application has closed. Students will therefore need to accept/reject their summer exchange offers without knowing the outcome of their funding application.

A reminder that all awards are a contribution towards study abroad and will not cover all of the costs; students should therefore not rely heavily on these.

Students are only able to apply and attend one programme during the summer, but may be able to take more than one course at their chosen university. Students can opt in for classes that are outside of their usual discipline, provided that there is no requirement by the partner that they have prior knowledge in the subject area chosen.

This means that the programme will be advertised pending either an agreement renewal or a condition that must be met first between the two parties. In some cases, and depending on the partners nomination/application deadlines, students may be able to apply for these institutions, but would be notified in good timing (where possible) if it cannot go ahead. 

There may also be opportunities with the same partners, but on a non-exchange basis. This means students can apply independently of King's and in this case students would be required to pay for their tuition fees. For some opportunities, students may receive a discount on the tuition fees, and should let the partner know that they are a student of King's and are applying as a non-exchange student. At present, students cannot transfer credit to their King's degree. Instead, students receive a transcript/certificate of completion from their host university which is just as good, and can be added to their CVs/Educational History.
