Sustainability and climate action have always been close to my heart. As a Global Health, Social Justice and Public Policy student, I see sustainability as more than just protecting the planet; it’s about acting ethically and responsibly for everyone’s future. The concept of "‘One Health, which connects human, animal and planetary health, guides how I approach my choices: what I eat, how I travel and what I consume.

King’s research and sustainability projects

At King’s, these challenges are being tackled head-on through research, education, and practical action. The university is building connections and using its expertise to inspire real change, both locally and globally.

A shining example of this is the King’s Net Zero Centre, a pioneering initiative dedicated to decarbonising our economy and society while addressing environmental issues. The initiative supports cutting-edge research in sustainable manufacturing and urban infrastructures, shaping eco-friendly futures.

And here is the exciting part: You could be part of the next generation of King’s change-makers scientists, engineers, policy-makers, and social scientists, driving the future of a more sustainable world.

King’s commitment to climate action is also evident in initiatives such as the Sustainability Projects Fund, which aims to empower students to develop and implement localised solutions to sustainability challenges. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to get directly involved in tackling climate issues!

The applications for the 2024-25 fund is now closed, but you can still apply for up to £500 in funding for projects at any time during the year so be sure to check this out.

What is Climate & Sustainability month?

King’s Climate & Sustainability Month takes place every February and is an exciting opportunity to explore sustainability through events such as film screenings, workshops, climate café events, net zero seminars, and climate escape rooms.

I attended last year’s London Student Sustainability Conference and found it both inspiring and an incredible way to learn while connecting with like-minded people. So why not give it a try, visit a climate café to hear innovative sustainable ideas, join a film screening to spark meaningful conversations, or challenge yourself in a climate escape room?

These events are not only a chance to learn and connect but also a great way to make a difference and see how you can be part of positive change.

Why climate and sustainability matters and what you can do to support

For me, living sustainably means recognising the ripple effects of our actions. Our behaviours here in the UK, what we consume and how we use resources, impact communities globally, contributing to rising sea levels, droughts, and food insecurity.

These challenges affect health, life expectancy, and overall quality of life, underscoring how interconnected we all are.

You’re probably wondering, "Where do I even start with sustainability and climate action?" The truth is, not everyone has to be a ‘Greta Thunberg’ to make a difference.

Small steps can make a difference; reducing meat consumption, shopping for clothes second-hand on Vinted or Depop, and choosing reusable items over single-use plastics, all collectively work to make a big impact. Sustainability isn’t about grand gestures; it’s about the ripple effect of the little things we do every day to reduce our environmental footprint.

Get involved

I encourage you to reflect on how small changes in your daily life can create a meaningful impact. Whether it’s attending an event, shopping or reconsidering how often you purchase an item, every step matters.

Whether you’re young, elderly, beginner or a self-confessed seasoned advocate, together we all have the power to make a difference.

This is a chance to come together, understand the climate crisis, and explore practical steps we can take to tackle it.

Join us this February to connect, grow, and take meaningful action toward a greener, more sustainable future.
