Feeling blue? Take Time Out for a happy and stress-free start of 2025

06 January 2025

With the winter break now over, another academic semester is about to come to an end. Hopefully, this means getting ready for a fresh start and preparing for the novelties of a new solar and academic year. However, the end of the break also means facing deadlines and exam season.

Experiencing London in the cold January temperatures, without its characteristic Christmas glamour doesn’t make things any easier. If you're feeling worried about upcoming assessments, or dreading the return to routine resonates with you, you’re not alone.

Having experienced the deadly combination of exam season and ‘winter blues’ before, I can confirm that it’s not made for the weak. However, there are a few things that you can do to prioritise your wellbeing at this time and set yourself up for success.

Tips for looking after your wellbeing

Plan something nice for yourself every day

This is a good way to motivate yourself to work well throughout the day. Also, it will prevent you from feeling too overwhelmed. It could be anything from a nice snack, a call with a long-distance friend, to the latest episode of your favourite podcast.

Take breaks from studying

It can be tempting to try to lock in and get through several consecutive hours of work. However, it doesn’t reward you in the long run. Taking short breaks can actually help in increasing concentration and making you feel more reactive when you get back to the books. Try out the Pomodoro technique: work 25 minutes, take a break for 5, and then start all over.

Step away from screens

Very often I find myself scrolling through Instagram between one study session and another. However, jumping from laptop to phone doesn’t really benefit mental wellbeing nor help to decompress from stress. Consider replacing Instagram and TikTok with a short stretch, a little walk or a coffee/tea break.

Surround yourself with people

Studying is hard, but studying alone is even harder. Working with a friend could be helpful in not feeling lonely (and also in having a buddy that keeps you accountable on your work!).
