Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death of women globally. However, women are consistently under diagnosed, under treated and under studied in cardiovascular care. On average only a third of participants in cardiovascular trials are women, which impacts the relevance and effectiveness of existing evidence. Our overarching aim is to achieve equity for women in cardiovascular research to address the health inequity women with CVD experience.

Work to date has focused on the barriers and enablers to women participating in CVD research, the strategies researchers can employ to improve the recruitment and retention of women in cardiovascular trials and exploring the wider academic, societal and policy areas where attention is needed.

We also have collaborations with:
Dr Matt Ryan on the REvascularisation for heart failure with PReserved ejection fraction and Ischaemia: EValuation of Efficacy and mechanistic Description (REPRIEVED) study.

The National Cardiac Surgery Clinical Trials Initiative

We welcome opportunities to collaborate and have capacity to support PhD/post-doctoral research in this area.

Aim

The aim of the WiCVT group is to reduce inequities in cardiovascular health by raising awareness and advancing understanding and representation of women in cardiovascular research.
