Public and community engagement with research (P&CER)
Enhancing the quality, relevance, and impact of King’s research to society
If you are developing a long-term research project and would like to embed the patient/carer voice throughout your research, you may consider establishing your own PPI/E group or inviting a patient representative to join your steering group.
Doing so takes time and resources, so it is important to plan for this from the start of your research journey.
For further guidance please contact KERN@kcl.ac.uk.
It’s important that patients and others with lived experience are reimbursed appropriately for their time and expertise, with many research funders requiring PPI to be adequately costed into research proposals.
Specific costs for PPI will differ depending on the level of involvement you are planning, and the NIHR have developed a useful guide on how to budget for involvement.
If you would like to discuss your PPI plans and how to resource, please get in touch with Impact Engagement Services or your local engagement support team.
Building patient and other lived experienced perspectives into the early stage of research grant development is both valuable and a requirement for many funders, but funding such activities can be challenging.
If you are looking to carry out early-stage PPI work, but don’t have access to funds, the below funding streams may be of relevance:
Funded by the Centre for Doctoral Studies, doctoral research students, research staff and academic staff at King's are invited to apply for a small grant of up to £1,000 to deliver a public engagement activity, including PPI/E.
The NIHR Research Support Service provide regular workshops on implementing public involvement, delivered by researchers, patient representative and Public Involvement Advisors. These provide great opportunities for you to find out how to apply good PPI/E in your research.
If you would like to run a separate PPI/E training for your faculty, centre of group, please get in touch with KERN@kcl.ac.uk.
