Black Box by Mark Stuart-Smith

Black Box by Mark Stuart-Smith is an artistic response to the Leverhulme Trust funded project Synthetic Pasts – a critical-creative inquiry into algorithmic afterlives, deepfake technology and digital trickery. Synthetic Pasts asks what futures for personal and collective memory our algorithmic present anticipates and paves the way for.
Black Box consists of a carved wooden sculpture of a head, begun when the artist was 16 years old, and reworked and reanimated for the present Curiosity Cabinet’s exhibition ‘Fake’. The head rotates inside a miniature simulacrum of the place where it was first carved.
