The Corbett Seapower Centre supports research and understanding of security issues (as broadly conceived) in the maritime world. Through interactions with policymakers, practitioners, academics, and industry, the Centre is a focal point for discussions of maritime security policy, shipping and seapower.

The Centre fosters interdisciplinary understandings of security and maritime power, including approaches from history, strategic studies, International Relations, and geography. Colleagues from the Seapower Centre continue to engage with navies, security practitioners and regulators around the world in educational initiatives and doctrinal development, and we welcome engagement from these sectors.

Founded in the mid-2000s as the Corbett Centre for Maritime Policy Studies within the Defence Studies Department, the Centre now works across and beyond the School of Security Studies, incorporating the work of the Laughton Unit. We welcome collaboration and engagement from across King’s and from external partners.

The Corbett Seapower Centre aims to:

  • Enhance the national and international visibility of maritime affairs
  • Develop links among academics and academic departments, as well as policy-makers and other individuals and institutions with an interest in this subject area
  • Foster policy-relevant research, both individual and collaborative projects
  • Provide a forum for policy debate and analysis
  • Support and develop research-driven education
  • Provide a focus for all interested parties, stimulate debate and disseminate the outcome through publications and public comment
