Biography
Rory Bremner (French & German, 1984) is a celebrated comedian, best known for his sketch show work and political satire. He is one-third of beloved former comedy trio, Bremner, Bird and Fortune, and he has regularly appeared on popular shows like Mock the Week and Whose Line is it Anyway?
Rory Bremner was born in Edinburgh in 1961. He attended Clifton Hall College and Wellington College, before coming to King’s, where he began to nurture his comedic talents.
While at King’s, Rory worked on London cabaret scene and he was an active member of the student drama club. His first taste of fame came in the form of a hit parody song in which he impersonated several cricket commentators.
Rory contributed to well-known sketch shows such as Spitting Image and Week Ending, before landing his own BCC 2 sketch show, Now – Something Else, in 1987. Six years later, he teamed up with comedians John Bird and John Fortune and the show, Bremner, Bird and Fortune was born. The series lasted until 2010 and featured satirical impressions of various British politicians through the years, from Tony Blair to David Cameron.
As well as comedy, Rory has dabbled in documentaries. He presented his own BBC Radio 4 series, Rory Bremner’s International Satirists, where he interviewed fellow comedians and satirists from across Europe.
In 2009, Rory returned to his roots with Rory Bremner and the Fighting Scots, a historical documentary on Scottish members of the British Army. That same year, Rory featured in an episode of Who Do You Think you Are? In this, he embarked on a mission to find out more about his army Major father, a man he barely knew.
Rory was diagnosed with ADHD in 2017 and was featured in the Horizon documentary, ADHD and Me. This followed Rory through the diagnosis process as he learnt more about the science of ADHD and how the condition could impact him on a day-to-day basis.
A talented linguist, Rory has used his King’s degree to translate three French and German operas to English. In 2007, he took part in the Big Brecht Fest, celebrating and translating the works of renowned German playwright Bertolt Brecht.
2015 marked Rory’s return to comedy and BBC Two with satirical programmes Rory Bremner’s Coalition Report and the Election Report. In 2016, he joined Alexander Armstrong’s comedy game show, The Imitation Game, as a team captain.
Rory is an honorary life member of King’s College London Students’ Union and was made a fellow in 2005. His extraordinary talent, sense of humour and curiosity are values he shares with members of our King’s alumni community across the globe.
