Biography

Professor Peter McGuffin is a retired Consultant Psychiatrist and Emeritus Professor of Psychiatric Genetics at the IoPPN, who has had a remarkable career as a dedicated clinician, world-renowned scientist, and generous leader. His research background is in the genetics of psychiatric disorders and behaviour. He was previously Dean of the Institute of Psychiatry and Director of the Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre here. Before that, he held the Chair of Psychological Medicine in Cardiff. Professor McGuffin’s many achievements include being elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1988 and Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1989, and he became a founder Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998. Other honours include Lifetime Achievement Awards from the International Society for Psychiatric Genetics (2007) and King's College London (2012) and an Honorary Fellowship from Cardiff University (2008). He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2016 Birthday Honours for services to biomedical research and psychiatric genetics.
