Biography

Alison Jones is Professor of Law at King’s and a solicitor at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP. Alison teaches and researches in the sphere of competition law. Prior to joining King's, Alison read law at Girton College, Cambridge, worked at Slaughter & May and completed a BCL at Christ Church, Oxford. She holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge. Alison has held visiting positions at the Universities of Oxford, San Diego, Fribourg, and Zürich and at the College of Europe.

Alison is the co-author of a core OUP text on EU Competition Law, Jones and Sufrin's EU Competition Law: Text, Cases, and Materials (OUP, 8th ed, 2023), author of a monograph on Restitution and European Community Law (LLP, 2000), a co-author of Combatting Corruption and Collusion in Public Procurement: A Challenge for Governments Worldwide (OUP, 2024, forthcoming) and has published in leading academic and specialist competition journals and a number of edited collections. Her research has won Concurrences Antitrust writing awards. She has also prepared expert reports for the European Commission, the UK Government and the US House Committee of the Judiciary, Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial, and Administrative Law.

Alison is one of the editors for the Yearbook of European Law and is on the advisory board of a number of other journals. For a number of years she has been part of the Leadership of the American Bar Association Antitrust Law section.

Alison was Vice Dean (Academic Staffing) and a member of the Law Executive Team between 2018-2021. She has also been the Competition Law Pathway Leader, Director of a number of the school's study abroad programmes and is an organiser and member of the executive team of the Herbert Smith Freehills Competition Law Moot. She is a Competition and Markets Authority ICN Non-Governmental Advisor and in has been identified by Who’s Who Legal (WWL) and Global Competition (GCR) Review’s independent research with clients and peers as a leading expert in competition law.

What research grants are you currently working on?

In 2023 Alison completed work on a Leverhulme Trust grant, ‘Combatting Corruption and Supplier Collusion in Public Procurement’ . The work completed built on research commenced with a British Academy Small ‘Developing a Pro-Competition Procurement Policy’ 2016.

Research interests

Alison's research focuses on competition law and policy, especially in the EU, US and UK. In addition to co-authoring a general book on EU Competition Law, her journal papers focus on specific aspects of competition law and policy and how it interacts with other areas of law (for example, public procurement, anti-corruption or intellectual property law).

Alison has just completed a project that considers how jurisdictions around the world can better protect their public procurement systems from distortion by corrupt and anti-competitive practices.
