Biography

Luca Sforzini is a psychiatrist and postdoctoral researcher in the 'Stress, Psychiatry, and Immunology Lab' and 'Psychoimmunometabolix and Interaction with the Environment Lab' at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience at King's College London. He is also supported by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

Dr Sforzini completed his medical degree (2008-2015) and specialist training in psychiatry (2015-2019) at the University of Milan, in Italy. He then moved to King's, where he obtained his PhD in psychological medicine (2020-2024).

His research focuses on understanding the translational mechanisms of major depressive disorder (MDD) and treatment-resistant depression (TRD), particularly immune-related gene expression. His goal is to identify molecular and biological signatures that contribute to the phenotypic diversity of MDD and TRD, ultimately guiding future research and personalised interventions. He is also part of several international projects aiming to refine the understanding of MDD, working toward a precision medicine approach.

Dr Sforzini has published numerous research articles. He contributes to peer review for various scientific journals and is actively involved in textbook writing, teaching, and public engagement. Additionally, he serves as an editor for the mental health digital magazine Inspire the Mind.
