Biography

Professor Hughes has recently retired but maintains links with the faculty. His research and academic interests are focused mainly on the biology of periodontal regeneration, systemic and genetic risk factors for periodontal disease, and periodontal biomarkers.  He continues to study in these areas, and teaches the research methodologies course to Masters Students, as well as contributing to a number of other educational programmes within the faculty. 

In addition to generations of undergraduates, Professor Hughes has contributed to postgraduate and specialist level training in Periodontology for well over 100 students from around the world. He has also supervised a total of 23 PhD students through to successful completion of their theses.

He was Chair of the Annual Session Committee for the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) from 2018-2019, and served as an EFP-nominated delegate to the 2017 World Workshop on Classification of Periodontal Diseases, Chair of the EuroPerio 8 (London 2015), President of the British Society of Periodontology (2009-10) and Chair of Pan European Federation of IADR (2007-08).

Researchers in the Centre for Host Microbiome Interactions study our relationship with these bacteria and fungi in health or in oral and systemic diseases such as periodontitis, candidiasis, oral cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
