Dr. Eduardo Svartman is Associate Professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science and BA and MA in History.

 

In his Ph.D. dissertation, Svartman studied the group of Brazilian military officers whose careers interwoven professionalism and political activism in the 20th century, a contribution to the understanding of the 1964 coup in Brazil. Following some of the findings of this research, he studied the Brazilian and United States military relations during the Cold War and later the features of the Brazilian military thought regarding strategy, force structure, and politics. His current project is a comparative study about the incorporation of deep fire systems (the Precision Strike Missile and the AVTM-300 missile) and their impacts on the expected transformation of the British and Brazilian armies. Dr. Svartman also researched how international think tanks produce narratives about Brazilian defence and foreign policies.

 

Before joining King’s as Visiting Senior Research Fellow, he was Visiting professor at the Elliot School of International Affairs in (Washington, DC), at the Universidad Nacional de Rosario (Argentina), and at the Universidade Joaquim Chissano (Mozambique).

 

Professor Svartman is the President of the Brazilian Defense Studies Association.
