Biography

In his career as a British diplomat and international civil servant, John Freeman served variously as Ambassador to the UN in Vienna, Ambassador for Multilateral Arms Control and Leader of the UK Delegation to the Conference on Disarmament (CD) in Geneva, Minister at the UK Delegation to NATO, and Deputy Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague.

 

Research

John's research in the Centre for Science and Security focuses on current challenges to multilateral and regional arms control—especially the nuclear dimension—and the impact of the Ukraine conflict on NATO and neutrality.

 

Publications

John has published works on arms control in the context of the CWC and OSCE, as well as the nuclear relationship between the US and the UK. He is currently engaged in writing a biography of Lord Penney, a key player in the development of the UK’s nuclear deterrent.

He has also contributed book reviews and other articles for “Reaction.”
