Biography
Dewi Owen earned his BSc in Biomedical Sciences at University College London (2013–2016), specialising in the Immunology and Infection stream during his final year. Following graduation, I worked as a research assistant at UCL for three years, focusing on respiratory molecular diagnostics and contributing to two tuberculosis treatment clinical trials. Dewi then moved to the University of Edinburgh to investigate the relationship between pesticide use and the development of antibiotic resistance in Klebsiella species. He began his PhD at King's College London in 2020, which examines the role of host genetic factors in the development of early gum disease (gingivitis) and their impact on the oral microbiome. Dewi's research integrates clinical samples from a biobank of dental patients and involves conducting an experimental gingivitis clinical trial. He employs a multi-omics approach—including metagenomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and multiplex immunoassay techniques—to explore genetic influences on disease severity.

Research
Centre for Host-Microbiome Interactions
Millions of microorganisms live in and on our bodies forming microbiomes on different surfaces. Researchers in the Centre for Host Microbiome Interactions study our relationship with these bacteria and fungi in health or in oral and systemic diseases such as periodontitis, candidiasis, oral cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
Periodontology and Periodontal Medicine
Research into periodontal and peri-implant diseases with the aim to improve patient care and quality of life.
Functional Microbiome Group / Moyes Group
Investigating the functional interactions between microbes/microbial communities and mucosal surfaces.
