Reader in Ageing and Mental Health Data Science

Biography

Christoph Mueller is a Reader in Ageing and Mental Health Data Science at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), King’s College London.

My research focuses on the epidemiology and care of mental health conditions in later life, including dementia. I use large datasets of electronic health records, including the unique Clinical Record Interactive Search (CRIS) platform.

CRIS provides access to more than 30,000 anonymised records of people with dementia and other age-related mental health conditions receiving routine NHS care. CRIS output is enhanced by a large suite of natural language processing applications, making in-depth information from free text accessible, and by a wide array of data linkages that enable the study of the patient journey through the health and social care system. A video in which I describe dementia research using CRIS can be found here.

My research projects include studying the course of mental health conditions in later life, outcomes of medication use and adverse effects, the influence of environmental and contextual factors on dementia progression, the prognosis and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and non-Alzheimer’s dementia subtypes (such as dementia with Lewy bodies), and the potential of digital interventions to improve dementia care.

I am the Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist for Greenvale Specialist Care Unit, a centre of excellent care for older people with complex mental health conditions.

Teaching

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and teach and supervise resident doctors at South London and Maudlsey NHS Foundation Trust, as well as MSc and PhD students at King’s College London. Between 2015-2021 I was one of the leads for Maudsley Mentoring Scheme, the oldest and longest-running peer mentoring scheme for resident doctors in psychiatry.

Expertise and Public Engagement

I am an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and the chair of the CRIS 4 Dementia (C4D) Patient and Public Involvement Group.

I am an expert on the European Task Force for Treatment-Resistant Depression in Older People and the co-organizer of the successful Quarterly Old Age Psychiatry Academic Meeting, which brings together South London and Maudsley old age psychiatrists with IoPPN academics, successfully bridging the gap between the NHS and academia.
