Biography

Two narratives constitute the main components of my research project Contesting the Golden Exile: the voices of the children of exiles - hijos, via their literary output, anti-exile regime propaganda, with a focus on the dominant memory model that emerged during Chile’s transition to democracy from the early 90’s. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is the methodological framework supporting the analysis of exile representaions in the Chilean media. I am particularly interested in how the concept of the 'Golden Exile' was used to distort the true experience of forced political exile, and the concept's sustained effects upon the return experience. Hirschian post-memory theory supports my approach to post-exile literarture, and the value of these texts in contesting established regime exile narratives.
