Andy H
Wellbeing Advisor (Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine & Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences)
Biography
"I joined KCL in 2022 after working in social work and community partnership roles. As such, I’m very passionate about widening participation, working with the individual’s context in mind, and supporting students to feel empowered to make the decisions that are right for them.
I lead on Wellbeing for the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine (FoLSM) and the Faculty of Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Sciences (FoDOCS). Not only do I work 1:1 with students, but also in collaboration with the faculties to highlight evolving student needs and model best practice.
Sometimes students find it helpful for me to attend support meetings with wider staff, or to meet with them before returning from an interruption of studies so we can make sure they have everything they need to succeed. As an LGBTQ+ staff member who has experienced mental ill-health, I also bring my lived experience to inform my work on a daily basis – most recently, this includes becoming a King’s Staff 100 Panel Member, which works to create a thriving university community.
Alongside my core role, I work closely with the Priority Groups team to deliver our service to Care Leaver, Estranged, and Forced Migrant students. This includes training Senior Tutors to embed support within the faculties. Furthermore, I have begun working with the King’s Doctoral Students’ Association and the Francis Crick Institute to improve access to Wellbeing resources and further develop the reach and quality of our service."
