We Met at King's - Our year in London

In the latest of our We met at King’s series, we take you across the pond to tell the story of Julie and Peter Chaloner (both History, 2012). Julie and Peter grew up just an hour away from each other in the USA, but it took a trip across the Atlantic to King’s before they finally met. We caught up with Julie, and discovered how King’s and London will always hold a special place in her heart.

‘Peter and I spent our early dating days exploring London together. We loved walking around the city and taking it all in.

Peter lived in Wolfson House near Guy’s Campus, so for our first date, he made a reservation at a restaurant on the Thames and requested that we have a table that faced Tower Bridge. It was very romantic seeing the bridge lit up at night, it was a great start to our story.

Both being American, we wanted to make the most of the time we had in London. So we picked a new activity to do each weekend. Some of our favourites included the Courtauld Gallery, visiting Greenwich, the Museum of London, and Borough Market.

We frequented the many great pubs around King's, including Gordon's Wine Bar near Embankment station. We made so many great friends in the city and we very sad to leave at the end of the year.

We married in December 2016, but we delayed our honeymoon until summer 2017. We are planning to visit London for a week in August. We’d like to visit all our old haunts as well as experience a few things that are new since our last visit including The Shard.

We’re looking forward to seeing old friends when we’re back in London. King's was a life changing experience for us and we never hesitate to recommend the university or London to anyone.’

Of King’s Connect US Events, Julie adds: ‘We love when King's comes to Boston each year and always try to attend the events. It's really great to connect with other alumni and members of the King’s community.’

Peter and Julie now live and work in Boston, USA. Julie works in recruitment, and Peter works in finance. They enjoy traveling, visiting museums, going to the beach, and a great pint of beer. They have a cat called Hocus.
