For a decade, the YTL Centre has driven excellence in rigorous interdisciplinary thought, engaging policymakers and the wider public in ongoing conversations on how to create a better society. We thank YTL for this generous donation, which ensures we can continue to explore major issues in law and politics through the lens of philosophy to answer some of the most pressing questions faced by society today.

YTL donates £3 million to the Yeoh Tiong Lay Centre for Politics, Philosophy and Law
The contribution will enable the Yeoh Tiong Lay Centre for Politics, Philosophy and Law to provide innovative education for the future generation.
The Yeoh Tiong Lay (YTL) Centre for Politics, Philosophy and Law was established through a £7 million gift in 2013 from the family of Malaysian Law alumnus, Mark Yeoh (LLB, 1987), and opened in 2014 as a focal point for interdisciplinary research in law from the perspective of both philosophy and politics.
Over the last decade, the Centre has become a focal point for exceptional students, offering them an innovative education which inspires them to become visionary thinkers, develop a desire to be the best in their field, and to make a significant, positive, lasting impact in society.
The additional £3 million gift will support the next generation of talent in politics, philosophy and law, and enable the reputation of the YTL Centre to grow in the UK, Malaysia and internationally. The package of support will further enable the ethos of the Centre through the sharing of knowledge and expertise amongst students and academics.
The gift will go towards awarding:
- One Yeoh Tiong Lay PhD Scholarship once every four years
- One Yeoh Tiong Lay Early Career Fellowship every year for five years
- Two Yeoh Tiong Lay Visiting Fellows every year for five years
- Yeoh Tiong Lay LLM Scholarships for students domiciled in Malaysia
In September 2023, the Yeoh family and close friends visited King’s to celebrate the impact the YTL Centre has had over the last decade.
During the event, Professor Massimo Renzo, Director of the YTL Centre, Professor Dan Hunter, Executive Dean of The Dickson Poon School of Law and Shitij Kapur, Vice-Chancellor of King’s, all spoke about the impact of the Centre, the academic talent and students it has attracted and the research that was made possible through such a generous gift.
Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, Executive Chairman of the YTL Group, spoke about YTL’s commitment to driving educational excellence in supporting King’s and the Centre.
We are immensely proud to continue supporting the Yeoh Tiong Lay Centre for Politics, Philosophy and Law. For over ten years, the Centre has pushed the boundaries in exploring major ethical and moral issues that challenge our world today. We have seen the Centre go from strength to strength, establishing itself as a world leader in its field. We are excited to be able to support the Centre’s ambitions in creating opportunities to bring leading thinkers and talented students who uphold the Centre’s values of creating a better society. We are also delighted to be able to support the brightest and most deserving students residing in Malaysia to learn at one of the best Law Schools and Universities in the world. With many alumni from King’s College London contributing to Malaysia and the global community, we are thrilled to be able to give the gift of world leading education.
