The civil servants and a representative of the Japanese embassy in the UK heard from King’s academics about flexible working and other policies designed to support the recruitment of women into public service.

The workshop, organised by Dr Matia Vannoni, took place in the Department of Political Economy on 24 March and featured a presentation from Heejung Chung, Professor of Work and Employment with King’s Business School and Director of the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership.

Prof Chung spoke about how flexible working policies can benefit all workers, not only women or parents/carers, when implemented as part of a wider cultural shift.

Professor Andrew Blick, from the Department of Political Economy, presented on the workings of the UK civil service and particularly its rules on performance and pay.

Dr Vannoni said: "This workshop provided a valuable opportunity to share ideas and best practices on one of the most pressing challenges facing both society and the civil service today as workplaces continue to evolve.”
