Vice President for Research & Innovation knighted in King's New Year Honours

Professor Sir Bashir M. Al-Hashimi, the Vice President (Research & Innovation) at King’s has been knighted in His Majesty’s New Year Honours 2025 for services to engineering and education.

Bashir is internationally recognised by both academia and industry for his significant and sustained research contributions over 30 years to energy-efficient computing and semiconductor chip design and their practical implementation. His research and technology transfer has driven significant advancements in hardware and software technologies for digital electronic devices, including smartphones. His research has won numerous national and international awards, the most recent being the IET’s (The Institution of Engineering and Technology) most prestigious award, the Faraday Medal, in 2020.

Bashir was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 2023 and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2013. Currently serving Vice-President (Research & Innovation) at King’s College London, Bashir plays a pivotal role in shaping and implementing the university’s research and innovation strategy, with a focus on enabling multidisciplinarity, translating scientific discoveries into economic and social benefits, and early career staff development.

Over the course of his career, he has held numerous senior academic leadership roles in UK higher education. Beyond his academic work, Bashir is committed to inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers. As a trustee of several charitable organisations and elected trustee of the Royal Academy of Engineering Board until September 2024, he actively promotes science and engineering, and the diciplines’ exciting employment and impact opportunities, among young people. He is a regular contributor to national discussions on engineering education and skills development.

Bashir is also passionate about ethnic minority representation and is a role model for Black, Asian and minority ethnic academics and researchers, talking regularly about his career journey and experience to inspire others.

I have always wanted to emphasise engineering as a profession and champion the importance of engineering skills. I am truly honoured and deeply humbled to be knighted for services to engineering and education. This distinction recognises the key role the engineering profession plays each and every day in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges and the growing importance of engineers’ skills and achievements to shape a better future for us all.

Professor Sir Bashir’s work is inspiring. Over the years he has balanced many technical achievements with good citizenship in a variety of higher education roles to make a real difference in the world. He has contributed significantly to increasing diversity within the engineering profession, and continues to do so. The entire King’s community is delighted to see Professor Sir Bashir recognised in the New Year Honours, and we wish him our warmest congratulations on this well-deserved achievement.
