Students offered insight into parliamentary life on Westminster visit
A group of undergraduate students from King’s were given unique insight into the workings of the Houses of Parliament during a tour this week.
Students studying on different British politics modules were hosted by Labour MP Fleur Anderson who gave them a quick tour of Parliament. Next, they had the chance to speak to Fleur Anderson, but also Labour MP Rachel Blake, who represents one of King’s constituencies, Cities of London and Westminster, and Liberal Democrat peer Baroness Garden of Frognall.
They were able to ask questions about the life and job of an MP and peer as well as more topical issues, such as the UK-U.S relationship after the election of Donald Trump; how artificial intelligence might influence their work as politicians; and young people’s voting behaviour in the UK.
The trip was organised by King’s PhD student, Richard Power Sayeed, and Professor Peter John, head of the School of Politics and Economics.
Dr Isabelle Hertner, who also attended the visit, said: “The politicians were all very engaging and it was great to see an all-female panel, too. It was good also to speak with people who care about homelessness, the renting crisis in London, peace in Northern Ireland and everywhere.”
