Students invited to reimagine Parthenon Sculptures in creative writing competition
King's Department of Classics calls on students to participate in a unique creative writing competition using audio description as creative writing.
The Department of Classics has announced an exciting new opportunity for students to showcase their creativity in an audio description (AD) and creative writing competition centred on the Parthenon sculptures housed in the British Museum. This competition invites King's students from all Faculties to engage with the sculptures, offering fresh interpretations through prose or poetry.
Audio description, traditionally designed for blind and partially sighted audiences, is celebrated for its ability to vividly translate visual elements into words. Beyond accessibility, AD is increasingly recognised for its broader potential as "guided looking," enriching the experience of art for sighted individuals by emphasising sensory and cognitive impressions. Similarly, ekphrasis, rooted in classical studies, highlights the interplay between poetry and image, inviting a subjective and often deeply emotional connection to the artwork.
Participants are encouraged to explore the sculptures through diverse approaches.
The competition offers prizes of £200 for first place, £100 for second, and £50 for third.
